Periodontics

Periodontology is an entire branch of dentistry involving the study and treatment of the gums and bone supporting the teeth.

Periodontal disease is a progressive, usually painless disease of the gums caused by bacterial infections which attack the gums, bone and ligaments supporting the teeth.  It can occur at any age and if unchecked can lead to loss of teeth.

Some of the signs of periodontal disease are: bleeding gums (when brushing or flossing), bad breath, red, swollen or tender gums, loose teeth and receding gum line which has pulled away from the teeth.

At St Mary’s Dental Practice patients are encouraged to enjoy a full dental hygiene package as the Practice is pro-active in preventing and treating early signs of this invasive disease.
